Icy - Brian Brown
Artwork - Two Minute Drill
Through my own process of growth, in tandem with being from Nashville, I have so much love for people who put it on for the city and are nice with it at the same time. I’m grateful that the walls that kept creatives out of the game have come down over the years, but there are so many people who haven’t put that grind in and are searching for that fast success. They see the fruits but don’t want to plant the seeds.
“Please do not mind me, I just upped the prices, all them hoes excited, I’m Gucci, so icy,”
Brian Brown is not one of those people. From his release “On&On” about nine years ago to his most recent project, Two Minute Drill, Brown displays not only an incredible amount of personal and professional growth, but an overwhelming sense of dedication, perseverance, belief in himself, belief in the movements, and belief in the people. Brown tapped the multi-faceted, visual wizard, 303 Jac to handle the video, and Jac takes this Southern expression and injects a lot of that energy tied to skateboard culture, more specifically, some of the classic skate videos that we watched as kids. Whether it’s the cuts, burn fades, or transitions from crisp video to “potato” quality; Jac put his stamp on another weapon in Tennessee’s creative arsenal. S/O J. Fields too; he’s the only reason I even know about this song beforehand, from that session at the S*ho House, and I’ve had it in my head ever since. First, we had a Por Vida joint with Brian Brown, now we got a Brian Brown joint produced by Por Vida. I didn’t even connect the dots between this song and “La Casa” until I saw the cover art for Two Minute Drill, and Vida’s sound is something that I’ll gravitate to, especially with the gospel of Brian Brown being preached on top of it.
This song’s an anthem too, don’t think twice that it isn’t. You can be Icy about anything. Did you make some dope shit? So Icy. Did you get a promotion? Too Icy. You got that number and they texted you back? You an Icy mf. It’s never a crime to feel yourself. I think we get told a lot of the time to “act like you’ve been there before” or some sort of way to minimize how we feel. I’ve been told that, or had friends who felt insecure to be around me because of how I carried myself, but that’s Icy to me. No matter where I step, what room I’m stepping in, who I’m stepping with, I’m always going to be Icy.
If you don’t plant those seeds, you don’t see the fruit. If you don’t feel the wind, your roots won’t be strong. If you’re expecting your tree to grow in 1-2 years, I got some bad news for you. You might be able to create something amazing, enchanting, and life-altering, but that’s all different when push comes to shove. What are you in the face of adversity? Do you cower or do you face it?
Backpack B got the strongest tree in the land.
