“But it’s like this though… I’m tired of folks, you know what I’m sayin’, them closed-minded folks, you know what I’m sayin’, it’s like we got a demo and don’t nobody want to hear it, but it’s like this…”

In late December, producer/engineer/multi-instrumentalist Por Vida released his project Regeneración, an album with a variety of Hip-Hop flavors, and from his spacecraft, Vida continues to build on his already impressive catalog of creative ventures. Last week, Vida’s video for “La Casa” debuted, and I’m not lying when I say that this is one of the better rap showcases I’ve heard from the South in a minute. Directed and shot by the talented Ufilmme?, this video sets the scene for both the production and the lyricism. The shots, the color grading, and just the overall edit, in general, elevates this to another level.

And then you got the raps; three of Tennessee’s best. Michael Da Vinci, Chris P, and Brian Brown. I dare somebody to find me a rap song, no hook, just straight raps, not even taking a breath between verses, and keep me interested for the whole thing. You won’t be able to, not at this level of skill mixed with Southern personality. Maybe it’s a thing with me getting older, or listening to so much music in my day-to-day life, but this song made me jump out of my seat. I felt like a kid again listening to this; back when the samples were heavy and the lyrics were not only of quality but carried that excitement as well. I’ve dived into a bunch of different spaces in the last year, and something I heard talking to a journalist was, “You know it’s good if it gets you excited, and if you’re excited, it’s easy to write,” and damn if that ain’t the truth. This isn’t just good, I’d say it’s great.

The Source is one of the greatest platforms for Hip-Hop ever, and the 1995 Source Awards changed the course of the South, and music, forever. Who knows how the art world would have turned out if Outkast didn’t step on that stage. Atlanta was always going to be Atlanta, but would have music been the same? How would the Atlanta scene have been impacted? What if we never got 56 Nights?

Two black kids from Atlanta, standing up for where they're from, and for their people. Letting the world know, forever and always…
