I have a love/hate relationship with Twitter. Definitely one of the funniest social media platforms, but as with every platform, people’s thoughts can roam free, and Twitter really is the Wild West when it comes to the spectrum of human beings and their thought processes. I use to be in it thick, but I’ve recently tried to cut back on the bullshit I see on my respective timelines, and in rare moments, it’s rewarded me.

“This my ambition, my transition to the top…”

Almost 48 hours ago, Houston, TX native Seth Sutch dropped the visuals for his new song, “before the sunset,” a reflection on twenty-two years of growing up in the wasteland and the trials of a young man trying to break through. Using his natural confidence, various cadences, and just straight bars, Seth Sutch has a lot of the qualities I want in a rapper, and at twenty-two, hearing this is scary. That voice is twenty-two years old and it already sounds like the voice of many lifetimes, and for a little over two minutes, Sutch weaves a story of struggle and sacrifice, detailing his hunger to help elevate him and his team above everyday noise. Using Houston as his backdrop, this song really does feel like “theme music” for a rap superhero.

His beat selection is perfect on this one too. One of those eerie woodwind samples (à la “Shot You Down” by Isaiah Rashad) with some simple drums and a bangin’ 808, really is all you need to set the table to let a rapper eat. His vocals cut through the surrounding sonic ecosystem, to a point where the music actively amplifies his vocals, making them stand out even more. I’m always going to respect the rappers. There’s levels to this shit, and Seth Sutch is on that level.

One of those songs that’s short, with top-tier sounds and a concept that comes together in both the audio and the visuals, Seth Sutch is on the radar.

Sometimes, Twitter hands you a nice one.
