It’s Official. In 2024, Spotify Requires 1,000 Stream For Royalty Payouts
It has now been confirmed. Next year in 2024, Spotify is implementing a minimum annual stream threshold of 1,000 for any song uploaded on their platform to be eligible for a royalty payout. This has a lot of people up in arms and it’s re-invigorated the conversation around the principles of creation in the modern-day entertainment industry.
Is it helping? Is it hurting? It really depends who you’re talking to, and this really seems like an issue that everybody can have an opinion. Spotify’s intentions are “designed to [demonetize] a population of tracks that today, on average, earn less than five cents per month”. In April 2019, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek told Billboard that “nearly 40,000” songs are uploaded annually. Now, in 2023, with the advancements in both creators technology and rise and development of “A.I.”, MBW says that approximately 120,000 songs are uploaded to music streaming services daily, up from the 93,400 uploaded daily in 2022.
So how does this hurt? What is the next Bad Bunny or Taylor Swift wasn’t able to hit those benchmarks. Would it be enough for them to quit? Would they revamp their strategies? How does this affect the mentally of the bedroom creators?
On the flip side, how does it help? Will this new reservoir of money make enough of a difference? Do these “more legitimate” artists have a point when it comes to their respective royalty payouts?
Regardless, you need to market yourself…
