YouTube’s Culture & Trends Report 2023 - Overview

Last month, YouTube released it’s annual “Culture & Trends Report” and this one in particular is one that anybody who’s a creator looking to best utilize not only one of the biggest content platforms on the planet, but how to take everybody’s unique skillsets and further their creative missions.

The biggest takeaway was how fast technology is changing and how it’s emboldened creators and fans alike to create whatever they want and share it with the world.

Here are the demographics:

Countries: USA, U.K., Australia, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Korea

Ages: Adults Online (ages 18-44), Gen Z Online (ages 18-24)

Now for the numbers, and they are staggering. 82% of people polled 18-44 said they have posted some form of video content (Insta Story, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat) online in the last 12 months, with 68% of both age pools totaled saying they’ve watched videos about specific topics that they are into in multiple formats (short form, long form, podcasts, live streams). 54% of people said they’d rather watch creators break down events than watch the events themselves, giving creators more chances to detail their niches and get those fans who resonate with their cause.

Fandom hasn’t only evolved, it’s exploded. With more content to consume now more than ever, the tiers of fans are showing out more than ever. They are listed out as Casual Fans, Active Fans, and Professional Fans, with each group providing different vantage points of the current state of fandom.

Casual Fans - Passive consuming, content more related to their fandom (lore/behind the scenes content)

Active Fans - Interaction with brands/campaigns, remixing/riffing content, meme making

Professional Fans - Fans who create content for other fans, using expertise to create for a general audience

This goes beyond any physical means really. Whether it’s an artist, a creator, specific content, etc. Fandom exists in the hearts and minds, two things you can’t put a limit on. They also spoke about AI, VTubers, the new editing tools available, basically everything under the sun for creation in 2023.

I don’t think there’s ever been a better time to become a creator, of any kind.
