Combination - Flessin2K & KGIGS

People really like to act like they planned their whole story out. Every move is calculated, by design, for a reason. No surprises, nothing offputting, making it look like it was their genius that made it happen, and that any slip-ups that occurred were all a part of the plan. I think a piece of human nature is wanting to be in control, especially of one’s own life/destiny, and that causes a lot of problems, both internally and externally. You value yourself/your public image to such a standard that, for every screw-up, there’s a reasoning and almost a responsibility to “protect yourself.”
“In the wing like Mo Salah, beat the odds, and still pray to God…”"
Flessin2k and KGigs released their project, “Gamez”, on January 6th, after a run of singles that started initially with “Really, Really” in July of 2022, followed by “Falling” in August, and “Mandatory” in December, which culminated in this spacey, hip-hop/pop infused story of affection, pain, feelings of loneliness, and it all begins unfolding with the opening track, “Combination.”
This track sets the tone for this whole project, with both the content and the sound. Starting off with floating synth chords, paired with moving ghastly vocals, brought to a head by bouncy, modern-day drums that help make this song I’ve been coming back to for a lot for the past couple of days, and for different occasions. Sitting home working, hooping, cruising around town; there are few situations I wouldn’t pull this song out at. The way both Fless and Gigs use vocals as an instrument, on this track specifically, is hypnotizing. Long tail, smooth changing melodics find a place to sit on a track with so much depth in the mix. The lyrics aren’t always “legible”, but it’s still full of quotable moments, especially when you start learning the melodies. This one is super catchy, and an excellent preamble to this project, which is an excellent start to 2023.
I’ve experienced the counter-effects of those “need for control” feelings, and it gave me a new perspective to grapple with. Life is inherently unpredictable, and if you try to have complete control, you will never find true peace. We can set ourselves up for success (or failure), but Life is gonna Life, and that train stops for nobody. That doesn’t mean we can’t create, love, inspire, and do the things that make us special, all while having a healthy respect for the things we can’t control.
One hell of a combination.
